The sector is under pressure
Multi-academy trusts are under sustained pressure to balance rising costs with tight funding settlements. The picture has worsened. Kreston's report found cost pressures outpacing income, with a sharp uptick in trusts reporting in-year deficits.
Falling pupil numbers in many areas only add to that pressure. Fewer pupils means less funding, at a time when costs keep climbing.
For most CFOs, the job has quietly changed as a result. It's less about keeping the books in order and more about giving leadership the confidence to make good decisions under uncertainty. That means understanding what's happening across every school, modelling what's coming, and explaining the numbers clearly to people who don't live in spreadsheets.
